Concrete vs. Paver Pool Deck in Florida — Honest Comparison

Concrete vs. Paver Pool Deck in Florida — Honest Comparison

Heat retention, slip resistance, repairability, and cost — what really matters when you're standing barefoot on your pool deck in July.

Surface temperature is the deal-breaker

On a 92°F July afternoon, a dark stamped concrete pool deck reaches 140–160°F. Travertine pavers in the same conditions stay at 95–110°F because of their natural porosity and lighter color. Bare feet feel the difference instantly.

If you're building a deck families will actually use, travertine or light-toned shellstone pavers win. See our cool-surface paver guide.

Slip, crack, and salt resistance

Travertine has a natural slip-resistant finish even wet. Stamped concrete needs a textured stamp pattern and an anti-slip additive in the sealer — without it, it's dangerous when wet.

Florida soil moves. Concrete pool decks crack at the control joints within 5–8 years. Pavers flex with movement and individual stones can be lifted and re-leveled. For salt-chlorinated pools, both work — but pavers don't show salt staining the way concrete does.

Cost over 20 years

Stamped concrete: $12–$18/sq ft installed, but plan on $4–$7/sq ft every 5 years for re-sealing and crack repair, plus a full resurface or replacement around year 15.

Travertine pavers: $18–$28/sq ft installed, with re-sealing every 3 years ($1.50–$2.50/sq ft). Most paver decks last 25–30 years before any major work. Full pool deck buyer guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are travertine pavers hot on bare feet?

No — travertine stays significantly cooler than stamped or colored concrete in Florida sun. Light-colored shellstone is similar.

Can you put pavers over an existing concrete pool deck?

Sometimes — if the slab is structurally sound and drainage works. We inspect first; an overlay is cheaper than tear-out when it's an option.

Do paver pool decks need sealing?

Yes, every 3 years with a penetrating sealer to protect against chlorine, salt, and stains while keeping the natural texture.
