How Long Does a Paver Driveway Take to Install in South Florida

From the day you sign to the day you park on it, here is the realistic timeline for a paver driveway project in South Florida and what can stretch it.
The short version
A typical seven hundred square foot residential paver driveway in South Florida takes four to seven working days on site from first excavation to final joint cure, plus two to four weeks of pre construction work for design, permitting, HOA review, and material order.
Total from contract signature to driving on the new field is usually four to six weeks. We share a written schedule before the project starts so there are no surprises.
Pre construction phase
The first week after contract signature is design finalization, material selection, and submittals. We bring sample stones to the property, mock up color and pattern, and finalize the layout drawing.
Permit application goes in the same week. Most South Florida residential paver permits are issued within five to ten business days. HOA review runs in parallel and varies widely. The full permit timeline is in the Florida paver permits article.
Material order timing depends on the product. Premium concrete pavers in stock colors usually ship in five to ten business days. Travertine and specialty colors can take two to four weeks for shipment.
On site phase
Day one is excavation. The existing driveway and any failed base material come out. Subgrade is exposed, leveled, and inspected.
Day two and three are base prep. Six inches of compacted limestone goes down in lifts. Each lift is compacted to specification before the next is added. Bedding sand is screeded to the final elevation.
Day three or four is paver install. Stones are laid in the chosen pattern, cuts are made for borders and edges, and edge restraint is installed.
Day four or five is joint sand activation, final compaction through a urethane mat, sealing if specified, and final cleanup. Inspection happens within a day or two of completion.
What stretches the timeline
Weather is the biggest variable. South Florida rain shuts down base prep and joint sand activation. We watch the forecast and we communicate proactively about any push.
Permit delays happen when applications are incomplete or when the project requires drainage engineering. We submit clean packages the first time and follow up daily.
Material delays on natural stone or specialty colors can push the start. We order at contract signature so the lead time runs in parallel with permitting and pre construction.
Design changes mid project are the most expensive delay. Once material is ordered and base is prepped, changes are real money. We finalize design fully before any equipment moves.
What does not stretch it
Driveway size scales the timeline less than people expect. A four hundred square foot project takes three to four working days. A twelve hundred square foot project takes seven to nine. The fixed setup time is the larger share on the small end.
Pattern complexity adds a day at most. Curves, circles, and bandings add cuts and waste but the per square foot install time only goes up by ten to twenty percent.
When you can drive on the new field
Foot traffic is fine within twenty four hours of joint sand activation. Vehicle traffic should wait forty eight to seventy two hours depending on humidity. Sealing, when specified, adds another two to five days before any traffic.
We coordinate the move back into the driveway and we share a clear day by day plan so households can plan around the temporary parking situation.
What happens if there is rain mid project
Light rain during base prep is workable on most days. Heavy rain pauses the project until the base dries enough to compact properly. We protect the work in progress with tarps and we do not push past safe conditions to keep schedule.
Joint sand activation is the most weather sensitive step. We schedule it for a stretch of dry weather and we coordinate sprinkler shut off with the homeowner. The full sand routine is in the polymeric sand guide.
Frequently asked questions
Slightly. Some steps like base compaction and sand activation are limited by sequence not crew size. Most residential projects do not benefit from more than one full crew on site.
Yes. We coordinate parking, driveway access, and entry routes day by day so the family can come and go.
We invoice for completed work and material on order. The contract spells out exactly how that works before signing.
